The colon cancer patients who consume an anti-inflammatory diet when opting for the phase 3 clinical trial have a longer post-treatment healthy life than those without. Similarly, involving the patient in more physical activities also may help.

At the American Society for Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting 2025, the study was shared for the secondary analysis of the phase 3 CALGB/SWOG 80702 trial (NCT01150045). The meeting was held in Chicago on June 1, and this has made the changes in the mindset of several medical health experts.

Every year, more than 150,000 individuals are diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the United States, and these numbers are increasing every year. Globally, it is the third most diagnosed and is the second most common when talking about deaths caused by cancer.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet/Exercise Promotes OS in Advanced Colon Cancer

The investigators have applied the empirical dietary inflammatory pattern (EDIP) method to examine the diet and its effects on 1625 patients. The scoring guide followed the 2 dietary questionnaires at different levels of the quintiles to measure the inflammatory level.

The patient diagnosed in the highest quintile has the highest inflammatory diet and an 87% higher risk compared with those having the lowest quintile.

The study is represented by Dr. Sara Char, who is the first author of the analysis and a clinical fellow in hematology and oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She says,

One of the most common questions that patients ask is what they should do after treatment to maximally reduce their risk of cancer recurrence and improve survival. These findings add to the published literature about the importance of dietary patterns and physical activity in outcomes of patients with colorectal cancer.

How the Physical Activities Help in the Survival

The researchers have divided the patients into different groups and tested the inflammatory results by providing different kinds of physical activities. About this, Char says,

We wanted to examine the joint effect of physical activity and diet on overall survival, as we know that both can impact systemic inflammation

Those with high physical activity had better survival chances and better inflammatory conditions as compared to the other groups. There are other detailed studies and experiments on the situation proving that people using the anti-inflammatory diet and involved in physical activities have better survival chances.
