- Summary
Cancer is a life-threatening disease, and for most of its types, surgery is a compulsory step through which the affected part of the body is removed permanently to avoid any chances of reoccurrence of the disease. Recently, a study was performed and published in the “New England Journal of Medicine” that proves that blocking neoadjuvant programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) can be helpful to avoid the surgery at an early stage.
In this article, I am going to define the main points of the research, and this is a basic-level study showing the definitions and basic concepts used in the research.
What is Early Stage dMMR Helping in Immunotherapy?
The DNA mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR) is a genetic flaw in the cells that makes the tumor highly sensitive to immunotherapy. The tumor with this deficiency responds remarkably to the PD-1 blockade, no matter where the tumor origin exists.
The dMMR are the cells that have undergone the mutations in certain genes. These genes involve the mistake corrections made during DNA copying in the cells. Usually, these cells have the combination of mutations that can lead to the cancer.
The main types where the dMMR cells are present are gastrointestinal cancers like colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, and some cases of breast, prostate, bladder, and thyroid cancers. The medical experts try to find if the cancer contains the dMMR to plan the treatment or to predict the tumor’s behavior during the medication.

The latest technologies are used in the research and treatments while dealing with the sensitive cases of diseases like cancer. Artificial intelligence is giving a helping hand to predict the disease; that is the only way to cure it before it is too late.

What is Immunotherapy?
It is a medical therapy used in the cure of cancer where the substances are utilized to suppress or stimulate the systems in the body to fight the disease, like cancer and some infections. The medical experts apply certain types of immunotherapy to target specific immune system cells.

There are also some other types of therapy that deal generally with the disease. The most common immunotherapy types are listed here:
- Cytokines
- Vaccines
- Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)
- Monoclonal antibodies
Summary
Immunotherapy is the way to control the cancerous cells using substances, and it is considered an effective way to deal with the cancer at an early stage. The cancerous cells contain a mix of DNA mutations and some of them have dMMR that can be used for preparing the body to fight the disease without any treatment.
Although it is an effective way to control the cells, it is not applicable to all cancer types and can be utilized only to deal with early-stage cancers. The latest studies encourage the use of dMMR in immunotherapy, and the experiments are being done to determine the exact success rate.
